The launching of the forest in Dumfries.

Moffat

The Memorial Forest in Moffat is part of the Moffat Community Nature Reserve, once a working quarry and now a haven for wildlife and a wonderful place to explore for local people and visitors alike. The old weigh-bridge is now part of a wildflower meadow, and the sand pits have become wildlife pools.

The Memorial site is marked by paving stones inlaid with bronze, and includes 125 trees planted in a single copse that visitors can walk around and within.

Getting There

  • Entrance is Free
  • Moffat Community Nature Reserve
  • The Community Nature Reserve is signposted off the A701. Follow the brown signs for Community Nature Reserve from the A701, as you are driving between Moffat and the M74.

The Memorial Forest planting site is accessible via a short walk of 300 metres (5-10 minutes) from the Nature Reserve car park. The ground is rough in some places. Those with access concerns can drive to the Memorial rather than walking along the access road.

To drive to the Memorial site: rather than parking in the car park, turn left just before the car park onto the access road. You will see a vehicle gate just ahead (please close the gate behind you). Drive straight for 2 minutes – the Memorial site will be on your right, and is marked by paving stones.
